College Baseball Final – Guilford 19, Greensboro 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Logan Jones had four hits and four runs batted in (RBI) in Guilford College’s 19-7 baseball win over visiting Greensboro College Thursday afternoon.

Jones, a freshman making his third college start, hit a three-run double in Guilford’s five-run sixth inning, which opened a 10-4 Quakers’ lead. After Greensboro (2-17) plated three runs in the top of the seventh, Jones knocked in his fourth run with a ground ball in Guilford’s nine-run seventh inning, which put the game out of reach.

Guilford senior John Macon Smith batted leadoff for the first time as a Quaker and responded with two doubles among his four hits, two stolen bases and four runs scored. Mo Keene and Rocco Wilcox both added two hits and drove in three. The Quakers (11-13) took advantage of six Greensboro errors, seven walks, two hit batsmen and four wild pitches. Freshman Chase Shuford (1-0) fanned a career-high eight in five innings to pick up his first college victory.

Blake Throneburg paced Greensboro’s offense with three hits and two RBI. James Feldmann and Andrew Ray both had two hits for the Pride. Jay Cumbo (0-1) took the loss in his season debut.

Guilford hosts Hampden-Sydney College Saturday (3/29) at noon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.
