GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nicole Marzocca scored her sixth goal of the game with 6:48 left in regulation to give visiting the State University of New York at Farmingdale an exciting 20-18 lacrosse win at Guilford College Wednesday night.
Marzocca’s game-winner broke an 18-18 deadlock, the game’s 10th and final tie, and marked the tilt’s seventh lead change. Teammate Brittany Rosino, who scored the game-tying score just over two minutes earlier, added an insurance goal with 5:18 to play. The final score marked the only two-goal margin of the second half.
Following a Guilford timeout, Farmingdale (9-1) won the ensuing draw and effectively ran out the clock. The Rams did not attempt a shot and turned the ball over just once in the remaining time. When Guilford did gain possession, Farmingdale forced a quick Quakers’ turnover with 49 seconds left and never lost the ball again.
Rosino finished with five goals and teammate Christy Thoden added four tallies and a game-high five assists. Thoden also won 10 draw controls as Farmingdale matched Guilford, the NCAA Division III leaders in draws per game, with 20 pickups apiece. Marzocca added two assists and finished with eight points. Despite allowing 18 goals, Rams’ goaltender Krista Spagnoletta made 15 saves, including six on free-position shots, which contributed to the Quakers’ two-for-11 shooting on free-position plays.
Guilford’s Lily Colley led all scorers with 10 points on a game-high seven goals and three assists. She also had six ground balls. E’leyna Garcia finished with seven points on six goals and an assist. She also collected seven draw controls, had three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Becca Colley added two scores, a game-high seven ground balls and four draws.
The Quakers (5-3) resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday at home versus Sweet Briar College. Opening draw is 1:00 p.m.
