Elon Women’s Lacrosse Phoenix Claim Dominating Win Over Presbyterian

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s lacrosse team remains unbeaten at home in Rhodes Stadium after posting a dominating 18-4 win over Presbyterian tonight, March 28. The maroon and goal is perfect 4-0 on its own field with one home game remaining on its schedule.

The Phoenix (5-6) outshot the Blue Hose (3-5), 39-15, holding PC to less than 10 shots each half, and controlled the advantage at the draw, 16-8. Elon picked up 23 ground balls in the game and saw nine players record points.

Molly Garrigan scored a career-high five goals and also assisted on two. Sydney Hesselbein followed with four goals and one assist, while Sloane Kessler posted three assists and one score. Emily Bishop, Olivia Fernandez and Anna Vitton each had two goals in the game along with one assist from Fernandez. Megan Weissman, Kelli Stack and Erin Murnane also tallied points in the contest.

Goalie Rachel Ramirez picked up her fifth win of the season between the pipes with seven saves in 11 Blue Hose shots on goal. Weissman won five draws in the game, while Fernandez and Garrigan each earned three.

Elon got off to a quick start, taking a 5-0 lead by the time the clock reached 25:23, including two goals by Garrigan. After Fernandez’s second score of the game, PC scored its first goal on a free-position shot to make it 6-1 with 17:25 to play in the half.

Vitton scored the final Elon goal of the first frame off a Kessler pass to make it an 11-2 advantage with 4:30 remaining. The Blue Hose’s Brianne Ward netted a goal with nine ticks left to make it an eight-goal lead, 11-3, for the maroon and gold at the break.

Ward scored her second straight goal for PC just over five minutes into the second half to close the gap to seven, 11-4. The Phoenix took over from there, reaching a 10-goal edge at the 21:33 mark after a Bishop goal (from Fernandez). Elon scored a total of seven straight goals in the second frame with the last two coming from Hesselbein in the final nine minutes.

For the game, Elon finished 14-of-17 in clear attempts, while PC went 11-of-18. The Blue Hose picked up 18 ground balls. The loss went to Tay Lyles who allowed five goals in less than five minutes in goal.

Elon will play its final non-conference game on Sunday, March 30, when the Phoenix travels to High Point to play the Panthers in a 2 p.m. game in Vert Stadium.
