College Men’s Track & Field Results – Guilford Sprinters Shine at Jopson Invite

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Joe Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) led a 1-2-3 Guilford College finish in the 100-meter dash to highlight the Quakers’ performance at the non-scoring Jopson Invitational Saturday at Bridgewater College.

Mitchell won the race with a college-best time of 11.16 seconds and was followed by teammates C.J. Green (11.43) and Clarence Turpin (11.60). Guilford’s Jonathan Sumner also qualified for the final and finished sixth in 12.28.

Green edged Mitchell by one-hundredth of a second to take second in the 200 meters. Lynchburg College’s Rachad Davis won the race in 23.04 seconds. Green crossed the line in 23.23 seconds and was closely followed by Mitchell. Turpin (23.70) was fifth and Sumner (24.04) eighth in the 21-man race.

The aforementioned students clocked the third-fastest 4×100 relay time in school history. The team of Mitchell, Green, Sumner and Turpin placed second among four teams in a time of 44.70 seconds.

Rookie thrower Ben Berenfield (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill)delivered a pair of the 10-longest marks in Guilford history. His throw of 10.48 meters (34’4.75”) in the shot put placed 20th in the field and sixth all-time at Guilford. Berenfield was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 36.59 meters (120’0”) and had the Quakers’ seventh all-time best discuss throw with a mark of 26.63 meters (34’4.75”).

Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers return to action Apr. 4-5 at the VertKlasse Meeting, hosted by High Point University.
