Elon’s Griffin Breaks Program Record in 100m Hurdles at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore Sydney Griffin’s new school-record in the 100-meter hurdles was one of the highlights for the Elon University women’s track and field team on the first day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 28, at the Paul Derr Track and Field complex on the campus of NC State.

Griffin broke her previous program record of 14.13 after she clocked in a time of 13.95 in the preliminary round on Friday. She will compete in the finals tomorrow beginning at noon.

Jennifer Pash set a new personal-record in the 400-meters with a time of 56.71, now the third-best time in school history. Senior Bria Bell was next with her time of 57.31 while another senior, Jackie Madden, had a time of 58.47. Simone Jackson was Elon’s top finisher in the 100-meters with a qualifying time of 12.47 while Bria Turner was next after crossing the line at 12.84.

Sophomore Megan Kirschling had a top-10 finish in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5’7” (1.70m) in the invitational division. Teammate Haley Laird won the college division with a mark 5’5” (1.65m).

In the women’s 5,000-meters, Elyse Bierut broke into the program’s top-five list with a time of 17:45.10. Freshman Kimberly Johansen had a time of 4:37.74 in the invitational 1,500-meters race while Shelby Cuddeback had a time of 4:47.29 in the college division 1,500-meters.

Charlise Morgan had a mark of 44’2.50” (13.47m) in the shot put followed by freshman Breanna Warren with a toss of 42’8” (13.00m), now the fourth-best performance in school history. Warren also had the best throw for Elon in the discus with a toss of 137’00” (41.77m).

Luis Vargas of the Elon men’s cross country team also competed at the meet on Friday. Vargas finished third overall in the men’s 5,000-meter “B” race with a time of 14:15.58. The junior harrier broke his own school-record on the men’s distance outdoor performance list.

The second and final day of the meet will conclude tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
