HPU Women’s Golf Wins The Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

MORGANTON, N.C. – The High Point University women’s golf claimed its fourth tournament title of the season with a first-place finish at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on Monday in Morganton, N.C. The Panthers shot a combined 297 in the final round to win by 17 strokes.

“Our team really worked hard for this win and showed a lot of determination both days,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “We’re all happy for Grier winning her first collegiate tournament. She played very well today and stayed composed the entire round. Both Sarah and Casey were able to come up with sub-par holes that helped them out. Now we have to turn our attention to the Conference tournament in two weeks and begin really preparing for that.”

High Point turned in its sixth sub-300 round of the 2013-14 season on Monday and finished the two-round tournament with a combined score of 610. The Panthers entered the season with just two sub-300 rounds in team history.

Junior Grier Bennett shot a one-over 73 in the second round to pick up her first career individual medal with a 36-hole score of 150 (77-73). Bennett’s previous top finish was a third place finish at the Pinehurst Challenge earlier this season.

Freshman Sarah Bae and sophomore Casey Ward tied for second in the event with matching scores of 152. Bae followed her first-round score of 77 with a 75 in the second round on Monday. Ward matched Bennett for the low round of the day with a 73 after carding a 79 on Sunday.

Freshman Danielle Fuss finished tied for ninth with a 36-hole score of 156 (80-76) and sophomore Tan Cheeranont finished in a tie for 19th with a score of 160 (82-78). Senior Margaret Suchan competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 58th with a two-round score of 173 (90-83).

Western Carolina finished in second place on Monday with a combined two-round score of 627. Big South squads Winthrop (628) and Gardner-Webb (632) finished in third and fourth while Bethune-Cookman dropped to fifth with a score of 633.

Bethune-Cookman’s Patrizia Trevisan was the top non-HPU finisher at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, tying Bae and Ward for second with a score of 152 (78-74).

The Panthers are off next week before heading to Ninety-Six, S.C., for the Big South Championship beginning on April 13. The three-day event will be held at the Patriot Golf Club. Last season, High Point finished sixth at the conference championship with a score of 932.
