HPU’s Brown Named AP All-America Men’s Basketball Honorable Mention

Redshirt-sophomore John Brown of the High Point University men’s basketball team was named Associated Press (AP) All-America honorable mention, it was announced on Monday. Brown led HPU with 19.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and was named Big South Player of the Year.

Brown is HPU’s third player ever to be named AP All-America honorable mention. Danny Gathings was named AP All-America honorable mention in 2003-04 and Arizona Reid earned the honor in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Brown was the only player from the Big South Conference to be named AP All-America honorable mention this season.

Brown was named High Point’s third Big South Player of the Year behind Gathings and Reid, and he was named to the All-Big South first team for the second year in a row. Brown was also named to the NABC All-District first team.

He became the first player in Big South history to score 1,000 points before the end of his sophomore season, scoring 27 points to surpass the milestone in HPU’s win over VMI on Feb. 26. Through two seasons, Brown has 1,063 points in 59 games, an average of 18.0 per game.

On the season, Brown averaged 19.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. Brown shot 54.5 percent from the floor and 74.5 percent from the free-throw line. In Big South games, Brown averaged 20.8 points and 8.0 rebounds.

Brown scored in double digits in 28 of 31 games this season, including 13 games of at least 20 points. He had seven double-doubles and was named Big South Player of the Week three times this season.

High Point went 16-15 overall, HPU’s second winning season in a row, and went 12-4 in the Big South to win the North Division as well as the conference’s overall regular season title. The 12 Big South wins matched the program record set last season. High Point became the first team ever to start league play 0-2 and win the Big South regular season. HPU head coach Scott Cherry was named Big South Coach of the Year.
