College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Hampden-Sydney 11, Guilford 10 (ot)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duncan Morris’ extra-man goal with 41.9 seconds left in overtime gave visiting Hampden-Sydney College an 11-10 lacrosse win over Guilford College Wednesday.

The Tigers’ (6-4) raised their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record to 4-0 and dropped the Quakers (5-4) to 0-4 in the league. Guilford was bidding for its first win over the Tigers since joining the league in 1992.

Guilford erased a 7-0 third-quarter deficit and tied the game at 10-10 on long-stick midfielder Rufus Terry’s wrap-around goal with 2:54 left in regulation. Terry’s tally capped a 4-0 Quakers’ run after Hampden-Sydney took a 10-6 lead with 7:41 remaining on Thomas Armstrong’s score.

The Tigers won the face-off after Terry’s goal and ran down the clock for a final shot. Goalie Thomas Deane stopped Hampden-Sydney’s Abbot Wallenborn with 40 seconds left, but two successive 30-second penalties on Guilford gave the Tigers a minute extra-man advantage. Armstrong’s shot with seven seconds left sailed wide and the teams went into extra time.

The teams traded possessions in overtime before Armstrong drew a 30-second pushing penalty on Terry late in the frame. Hampden-Sydney patiently worked the ball around to Armstrong, who cut to the goal, drew defenders, and dropped a short pass to Morris, who hit the game-winner from close range.

James Hughes paced the Tigers’ offense with four goals and Morris finished with two goals and two assists. Teammate Jake Koerfl also scored twice and won nine of 11 face-offs. He also picked up a game-high seven ground balls, which helped Hampden-Sydney to a 30-22 edge in pickups. Goaltender David Noftsinger made eight saves and had four ground balls.

Chase Rogers sparked the Quakers’ comeback with a career-high four scores. Adam Fiore chipped in two goals and one assist and Dylan Haupt dished out a game-best three assists. Connor Manning won nine of 21 draws and paced the Quakers with five ground balls. Deane finished with 11 saves and picked up two ground balls. Guilford outshot the Tigers, 38-32, and held them scoreless on six extra-man chances before Morris’ game-winner.

The Quakers entertain league-rival Randolph-Macon College Saturday (4/5) at 1:00 p.m.
