Long Ball Aids GC Pride Softball’s Sweep Of Mary Baldwin

STANTON, VA — The Greensboro College Pride softball team was back in actiono n Wednesday afternoon against Mary Baldwin College. The Pride is in the middle of a eight game in five day stretch. Greensboro College was able to come away with a series sweep of the Squirrels taking the first game 10-0 before winning the second game 8-2.

Greensboro College scored first in the top half of the opening inning play; Jackie Nicholson hit a long two run homerun putting the Pride up 2-0. Later in the inning, Madison Crisco was able to find the outfield grass for a two out single scoring Allyson Yeager making the score 3-0 in favor of Greensboro. The Pride was able to find the board again in the second inning when Sarah Connolly singled down the left field line for her first of two RBI’s in the game making the score 4-0.

Sarah Connolly got the Pride offense on the board again in the top of the fourth inning with a two out shot over the left field wall extending the lead to 5-0. Chelsea Brewer was able to get on the RBI train in the top half of the next inning with a single of her own making the score 6-0. The score remained the same until Greensboro was able to add four more runs on the top of the seventh inning preserving the 10-0 victory.

Greensboro College collected 20 hits in the first game with Connolly and Yeager collecting three hits each in the contest. The Pride also had multiple RBI’s in the game by Nicholson, Connolly, and Madison Crisco with two each. The 20 hits in one game ranks third in the Pride single game record books for most hits in a single game.

After taking game one 10-0, Greensboro College was able to score single runs in each of the first innings pulling out to a 3-0 lead. Jackie Nicholson collected two of the three RBI’s to start out the game following a sacrifice fly and a single through left side of the score 2-0. However in the third inning, it was Kali Pucket who plated Madison Crisco following a fielder’s choice making the score 3-0.

In the top half of the fourth inning, Greensboro College was able to add two more runs as Sarah Connolly scored on a first and third play making the score 4-0. The very next batter of the game Ashlee Miller singled to left field scoring Crisco making the score 5-0. Greensboro was able to score three more times in the game after Sarah Connolly connected on a three run homerun pulling the Pride out to an 8-0 lead. Mary Baldwin was able to get two run total in the final two innings, but Greensboro was able to hold on for the 8-2 victory.

With the two game sweep, the Pride softball team’s record goes to 17-15 overall and 10-8 in USA South play. The Pride will return to action on Friday afternoon at Piedmont College. The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
