College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Randolph-Macon 8, Guilford 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jason Andrews’ three- second-half goals rallied visiting Randolph-Macon College to an 8-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win at Guilford College Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 6-5 (2-3 ODAC) with their sixth win in eight games. The Quakers (5-5-5, 0-5 ODAC) dropped their fifth league game in a row, their third straight by a single goal.

Guilford gradually opened a 4-0 second-quarter lead before Nolan Clark’s extra-man goal 2:33 before halftime got the Yellow Jackets on the board. Justin Butler halved the visitor’s deficit 33 seconds before intermission.

The Quakers killed off a two-minute Randolph-Macon extra-man advantage and took a 5-2 lead on Daniel Haupt’s second score of the game 2:44 into the third quarter.

The game’s momentum changed thanks to three Yellow Jackets goals within a 72-second span later in the third when Nick Benhoff scored his lone goal then won the ensuing face-off and fed Andrews’ first score 16 seconds later. Butler capped the quick spurt with Randolph-Macon’s second extra-man goal of the game, which tied the score at 5-5 with 4:22 left in the third.

Guilford’s Chase Rogers restored the Quakers’ lead with his second goal of the game, but Andrews answered less than a minute later and the teams entered the fourth tied at 6-6.

Randolph-Macon’s Ryan Davidson scored the go-ahead goal 1:16 into the fourth quarter and Andrews followed with the eventual game-winner with 10:58 left in regulation.

Guilford’s Daniel Hughey scored a man-up goal two minutes later to bring the Quakers within one, but Guilford managed just two shots the rest of the way. Randolph-Macon outshot Guilford, 38-29, including 10-4 in the fourth quarter.

Benhoff’s play proved crucial to Randolph-Macon’s comeback as the sophomore midfielder won 14-of-17 face-offs, grabbed nine ground balls and added four points (1 goal, 3 assists), all game highs. Goaltender Brian Davies had nine saves and four ground balls. His backup, Thomas Smith, made two big saves in the third quarter while Davies was sidelined by a slashing penalty.

Adam Fiore paced Guilford’s offense with a game-high four assists. Rogers, Hughey and Haupt each scored twice for the Quakers. Goaltender Thomas Deane made 13 saves and shared team-high honors with three ground balls.

Guilford visits league-rival Bridgewater College Saturday (4/9) at 3:30 pm.
