GC Softball Sweeps Maryville in Big USA South Matchup

MARYVILLE, TN—The Pride softball team swept USA South opponent Maryville on Saturday afternoon. Greensboro took game one 10-2 in five innings before taking the second game 4-2.

Maryville jumped out to the early 1-0 lead pushing a run across in the first inning. Greensboro responded right back with a run in the second. Sarah Connolly led off with a walk before scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Allyson Yeager tying the score at 1-1. However, the Scots retook the lead at 2-1 with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Pride went on to push four runners across in the third inning. Alexis Hall singled to the pitcher and then moved to second on a Jackie Nicholson single up the middle. Connolly doubled to left field scoring the first run tying the game at 2-2. Yeager proceeded with a single up the middle pushing two runs across for a 4-2 lead. Madison Crisco got the last run of the inning with a triple to left field making the score 5-2.

Greensboro struck with five runs in the fifth inning pushing out to a 10-2 margin. Connolly doubled to left field and went on to steal home a double steal with Yeager taking second making it 6-2. Crisco sacrifice bunt plated the next run to make it 7-2. Hayley Rumley singled to left field pushing Sarah Tompkins across making it 8-2. A Kierstin McKenna sacrifice fly to right made it 9-2. The final run of the game came off a single by Chelsea Brewer winning the game 10-2.

In game one, Greensboro outhit their opponents 13-5, with five hitters leading the way with two hits apiece. Lauren Miller picked up the win throwing four innings of relief allowing no hits and striking two batters.

Again Maryville jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the first inning to make it 1-0. Greensboro came back pushing two across in the third for a 2-1 lead. Kali Puckett and Brewer singled to start the inning, before Connolly singled to center field scoring two runs making it 2-1.

The Scots came back to tie the game at 2-2 with a run in the third inning. Rumley doubled to center field in the sixth with two outs scoring Crisco retaking a 3-2 lead. Connolly tripled to right field plating Brewer for the final run of the game to win 4-2.

Both teams had ten hits apiece, with Brewer leading the way with three hits, while Crisco was close behind with two. Connolly had a game high three runs batted in. Dawn Harris got the win throwing four innings of relief.

With the sweep, Greensboro improves to 19-15 overall and 12-8 in USA South play. The Pride will conclude their regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader against Piedmont. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
