Guilford’s Pastor Throws Perfect Game in Softball Sweep of Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sophomore Calli Pastor (Newburg, Pa./Big Spring) threw a five-inning perfect game in the opener and Marty Wilcox homered and had five RBI in the nightcap as Guilford College swept Saturday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader at Sweet Briar College.

Pastor joined Jessica Burcham ’12 as the lone Quakers to pitch a perfect game. She accomplished the feat almost exactly three years to the day of Burcham’s perfect performance, April 14, 2011, also versus the Vixens. In her third pitching appearance and first start of the year, Pastor (1-0) fanned eight of a possible 15 batters, a career high. She struck out the side in the third and allowed just one ball out of the infield.

Guilford’s Michala Vestal (Randleman, N.C./Providence Grove) made her first college start and delivered two, two-run doubles for a career-high four runs batted in (RBI). Shelby Helms also had two hits and drove in two. Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) added two hits and Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) knocked in three runs.

Wilcox set the tone in game two with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, her team-leading fifth of the year. She also had run-scoring hits in the second, fourth and fifth innings, raising her team-best RBI total to 31. Hayes smacked her first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the Quakers’ seven-run third inning. She also had a double and scored three times. Helms added three hits and two RBI.

The offensive support made Rebekah Langston (7-0) a winner for the seventh time this season. The rookie southpaw entered in the third inning in relief of sophomore Brooks Bray, who made her college pitching debut. Langston allowed one hit, one earned run and strick out three in three innings.

Hollie Halford had a two-run double in the first inning for Sweet Briar (3-9, 0-6 ODAC).

Guilford closes a busy stretch of six games in three days Sunday (4/6) with a home ODAC doubleheader with Shenandoah University that starts at 2:00 p.m.
