HPU Women’s Track & Field Sets Several Bests At VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s track & field team finished hosting the sixth annual VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday. Senior Audrey Malloy won the 800-meter participation to lead HPU on Saturday.

Malloy won the participation section of the 800-meter on Saturday with a team-season best and an outdoor career-best time of 2:17.45. On Friday, Malloy was the second collegiate finisher and came in third overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase crossing in 11:21.05.

The Panthers continued success on the oval including sophomore Emily De Lena’s career-best time of 25.77 to place eighth in the women’s participation 200-meter. Freshman Amanda Gregory finished the race in 11th with a wind-aided time of 26.02.

Sophomore Lilla Lorand ran a team-season best time of 1:04.56 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 13th.

In the field events, sophomores Alyssa Palenchar and Jill Marois took third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. Both competitors cleard 3.57 meters (11-8.5), which is just shy of the HPU outdoor record of 3.65 meters (11-11.75).

Freshman Alexis Fernandez came in 10th with a career-best distance of 5.31 meters (17-5.25) in the long jump. Freshman Jenny Mara matched her career-best mark from the Coastal Carolina Invitational earlier this season with a clearance of 1.60 meters (5-3). Fernandez also competed in the triple jump where she set a team-season best and career-best mark of 11.71 meters (38-5).

On Friday, sophomore Christine Rickert set the VertKlasse Meeting record in the javelin with a toss of 47.26 meters (155-01). The mark was just short of her HPU school record of 47.78 meters (156-9), which she set last season at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational.

Tha Panthers will stay in the Triad for their next competition, the Aggie Invitational, beginning on Friday, April 11 in Greensboro, N.C. That will be the final meet prior the the Big South Championship event in Rock Hill, S.C. from April 17-19.
