Elon Women’s Golf Squad Wins Second Tournament Title of Year

WALLACE, N.C. — For the first time since the 2009-10 year, the Elon women’s golf team won two tournament titles as the maroon and gold captured the crown at the nine-team UNCW Seahawk Classic on Sunday with a three-round score of 907 (297-306-304).

The Phoenix entered the final round with a four-stroke edge over its nearest competitor, but extended that edge to eight strokes by the end of the tournament as second-place UNC Wilmington finished with a 915.

During the 2009-10 campaign, Elon shared the tournament title at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in September before claiming the title outright at the Mimosa Hills Invitational in April.

Led by a runner-up finish from Kelsey Badmaev, the Phoenix placed three golfers in the top 20.

Badmaev, the reigning SoCon Golfer of the Week, finished four strokes back of medalist Lori Beth Adams of UNCW with a three-round score of 221 (73-73-75). The second-place showing was the best of Badmaev’s career, while her 221 marked the lowest three-round score of her tenure at Elon.

Just two strokes back in third place was Sunna Vidisdottir. Vidisdottir reached her 223 with rounds of 69, 77 and 77.

In a tie for 13th was Kathryn Buckingham. Buckingham finished Sunday with a score of 231 (75-75-81).

After posting her lowest round of the tournament on Sunday, a 74, Katie Partridge placed 27th out of the 50 golfers in the field with a mark of 240 (80-86-74).

Finally, Emily Brooks’ 243 (84-81-78) placed her in a tie for 32nd.

Following Elon and UNCW in the top five were Delaware (918), Old Dominion (920) and Eastern Michigan (925).

Elon will now head to the Southern Conference Championship in Hilton Head, S.C. That tournament begins on Sunday, April 13.
