College Baseball Final – Guilford 3, Emory & Henry 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – John Macon Smith’s run-scoring triple in the eighth inning gave Guilford College a 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win over visiting Emory & Henry College Sunday.

Smith’s game-winning hit plated Herc Ingels, who led off the eighth with an infield hit. Smith finished with a game-high three hits in his team-leading 17th multiple-hit game of the season.

The hit made a winner out of reliever Andrew Martin (2-0), who entered the game in the bottom of the seventh after Emory & Henry’s Bransen Christopher tied the game with a two-run home run. Avery Rogers fanned two in a scoreless ninth inning for his second save in less than a day.

Smith scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch in the fourth off of the Wasps’ Andrew Sparks (2-3). Guilford doubled its lead on Gabe Mirabelli’s two-out, RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.

Guilford’s John Todd held Emory & Henry (8-18, 5-8 ODAC) scoreless for five and a third innings before running into trouble in the fifth inning. His lone walk of the game loaded the bases with one out, which brought Justin Morrison into the game. Morrison induced an inning-ending double play by C.J. Kirk to keep the Wasps’ off the board.
