GREENSBORO, NC — J.P. Lisk singled in the game winning run in the bottom half of the 12th inning, giving Greensboro College the 5-4 victory over Maryville College on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the start of the game, the Pride took a moment to recognize the six seniors on this year’s team.
Maryville got the games first two runs in the top of the first inning, but Greensboro was able to cut the deficit in half in the home half of the inning. James Feldmann got the Pride on the board when his single down the right field line plated Blake Throneburg bringing Greensboro to within one run at 2-1.
The score remained the same until the fourth inning of play when the Pride scored two runs pulling out to a 3-1 lead. Cole Starke got both of the RBIs on the play when his single through the middle of the infield scored Lisk and Kyle Willard making the score 3-1. Maryville was able to come back and tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning of play. However, Greensboro College retook the lead in the home half of the eighth inning when Cody York hit the ball hard to right field forcing an Scots error scoring Feldmann making the score 4-3 in favor of the Pride.
Maryville once again came back to tie the game at 4-4 in their final at bat forcing the game to extra innings. In the extra frames of play, Greensboro had several chances to put the game away early, but could not get a run across until the bottom half of the 12th inning.
In the 12th inning, Cody York singled up the middle and then stole second base to set up the game winning run. Following a Dylan Brown out, J.P. Lisk came up to the plate and laced a single to left field as York was able to beat the tag at the plate giving Greensboro the 5-4 victory.
Greensboro College was able to collect eight hits in the contest with Blake Throneburg and Lisk leading the way with two hits each. Cole Starke, James Feldmann, Cody York, and Brandon Soden each tallied one hit a piece in the contest. Pride senior starting pitcher Zach Royals took the no decision in the game tossing 6 1/3 innings of seven hit ball giving up just three runs. Fellow senior Jon Krecicki picked up the win in relief, pitching four innings of hitless baseball. Seniors Drew Baranosky and Daniel Longworth also appeared on the mound for the Pride during the contest.
With the win, the Pride’s overall record goes to 4-23 on the season and 2-19 in USA South play. The Pride are scheduled to return to Ted Leonard Park on Tuesday night when they welcome Roanoke College to Greensboro, North Carolina. The first pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
