College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Shares Second at Emory Spring Invitational

ATLANTA – Guilford College’s men’s golf team placed second in the 14-team Emory Spring Invitational Tuesday at the par-72, 6,860-yard Druid Hills Golf Club. The Quakers shot 295 and shared second place with Oglethorpe University, four shots behind winner Methodist University.

The tournament was shortened to 18 holes after Monday’s opening round was postponed by rain.

The event featured seven teams ranked in the current Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll and seven schools among the top-25 in the Golfstat.com Division III Relative Rankings. Guilford is fourth the coaches’ poll and eighth according to Golfstat. Methodist is seventh and Oglethorpe third in both rankings.

Freshman Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) paced the Quakers with a third-place finish in the 82-man field. He shot two-under-par 70 and missed sharing medalist honors by one stroke. Johnathan Chen of host Emory University and Jeff Wells of team champion Methodist shared the top spot after carding 69s Tuesday.

A trio of Quakers, freshman Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day), junior Nick Shedd and junior Drew Thompson shared 22nd place with three-over 75s. Guilford senior Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) finished 49th with a 78.
Coach Corey Maggard’s Quakers are back in action April 27-29 at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships at the Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C. Guilford serves as co-host of the NCAA Division III Championships May 13-16 at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center.
