College Softball Finals: Meredith 1–7, Guilford 0–6

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Meredith College’s Amanda Beirne gave up only five hits in ten total innings to earn two wins over Guilford College Wednesday afternoon. The Avenging Angels took game one, 1-0, and the nightcap, 7-6.

Both Beirne and the Quakers’ Maggie Shaffer controlled the opponents’ bats through the first four innings as only three runners between both teams would reach base. The Quakers put two runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings before being retired.

Shaffer (9-5) struck out five batters while surrendering just one run on two hits in the complete-game effort. Beirne (21-14) took the complete-game win, giving up just three hits while striking out four batters.

Meredith’s Lorri Cole represented the only run of the game, hitting a home run to left field in the top of the second inning.

The Quakers did not waste time producing runs in game two, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. After Meredith countered with two runs in the top of the second, the Quakers answered with a five-run in the bottom half of inning. Meredith then scored five unanswered runs, including four in the fifth inning, to claim the lead.

Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) finished game two 2-for-4 with two RBI on a double to left center field in the five-run rally in the bottom of the second inning. Hayes would finish the doubleheader 4-for-7.

Emily VanHaneghan finished 2-for-4 with a RBI-single to start the rally in the second frame. Taylor Boyd and Rachel Howard both finished the game 2-for-4, each with a RBI-double during the five-run rally.

Meredith’s Ashley Green connected on a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. Amanda White erased the Quaker lead in the top of the fifth frame with a three-RBI double.

Rebekah Langston (7-1) took the loss for the Quakers, surrendering seven runs on five hits while striking out three batters in four and one-third innings. Shaffer relieved Langston for the final two and two-thirds innings, surrendering four hits while fanning two batters.

Taylor Moore (1-4) took the win for Meredith, giving up six runs on seven hits in four innings. Beirne relieved Moore in the fifth inning and collected the save, allowing just two hits in three innings.

The Quakers (21-9, 6-6 ODAC) return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday, traveling to Lynchburg College for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
