GC Pride Baseball Falls To Guilford College 9-6

GREENSBORO, NC — The Greensboro College Pride baseball team returned to the field on Wednesday afternoon at cross town rival Guilford. The Pride fell in the game against the Quakers 9-6.

Greensboro College got on the board first in the top half of the first inning when Jon Krecicki singled home Blake Throneburg who doubled earlier in the inning giving the Pride an early 1-0 lead. However, the Quakers came back to take the lead in the home half with three runs off a home run to right center field pushing the out front 3-1.

In the visitors half of the next inning, Greensboro College was able to come back and tie the game at 3-3, scoring two runs on one hit. Cody York led off the inning reaching on a Guilford miscue before stealing second base to get into scoring position. Later in the inning York was able to advance to third base on a passed ball before scoring on a J.P. Lisk groundout bringing Greensboro to within 3-2. After the Lisk ground out, Brandon Soden got himself in scoring position with a double of his own down the left field line before coming in to score tying the game at 3-3 following a bases loaded walk by James Feldmann.

Guilford College was able to retake the lead in the home half of the second inning with one run pulling out to a 4-3. However, Greensboro once again responded tying the game in the top half of the third inning. In the inning, Cody York collected his second hit of the day before stealing his second back setting up a run scoring situation with one out in the inning. The next batter Dylan Brown would not let the RBI opportunity got to waste lacing a double to the gap tying the game at 4-4 as York crossed the plate.

The score remained tied at 4-4 until the Quakers took the lead 6-4 in the bottom half of the sixth inning of play, but once again the Pride was able to answer the call. In the top half of the seventh inning, Greensboro had back to back one out singles by Blake Throneburg and James Feldmann putting two runners own for the middle part of their batting order. Following the singles, Throneburg came in to score as Jon Krecicki reached on another error by Guilford making the score 6-5. The very next batter Kyle Willard singled through the left side of the infield scoring Feldmann tying the game at 6-6.

After Greensboro College scored the game tying runs in the top half of the seventh inning, the Quakers scored the game’s final three runs over the last two innings of play en route to the 9-6 Pride defeat.

Greensboro College collected 11 hits in the game as Brandon Soden led the team with three hits. Blake Thorneburg also had a good day at the plate for the Pride with two hits in three at bats. Austin Hardin started on the mound for Greensboro College but would not factor in the decision. Wil McGuire (0-2) took the loss for the Pride while only giving up one run.

With the loss, the Pride’s overall record falls to 4-24 on the season. The Pride will return to action on Friday morning, as the Pride plays LaGrange College at the 2014 USA South Spring Sports Festival in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The Prides first contest against the Panthers will take place at Bauer Field on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College. The first pitch of the game is set for 11:00 AM. College Baseball Final – Guilford 9, Greensboro 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Herc Ingels beat out a seventh-inning single to break a 6-6 tie and help Guilford College to a 9-6 baseball win over visiting Greensboro College Wednesday.

Ingels’ two-out, bases-loaded hit off of reliever Jay Cumbo knocked in Tyler Petersen, who reached on a throwing error by Wil McGuire (0-2) earlier in the inning.

The Quakers added two insurance runs in the eighth. Nathan Fulbright’s deep double to center field scored Corey Wallace from first. Fulbright scored on the following play on one of five Greensboro errors, which contributed to five unearned runs.

The Pride (4-23) put its first two runners of the eighth inning on second and third to chase reliever Justin Jordan (2-1) in favor of Justin Morrison. The junior fanned Tony Starke for the inning’s first out. After intentionally walking Blake Throneburg to load the bases, James Feldmann hit a grounder to shortstop, which forced Throneburg at second. Throneburg was called for interference, completing the inning-ending double play. Morrison retired the side in the ninth for his team-leading third save of the season.
Corey Wallace paced the Quakers’ 14-hit attack with three hits, including a three-run first-inning homer, his league-leading ninth of the season. Michael Whited also had three hits and John Macon Smith contributed two hits, including a two-run sixth-inning double.

Greensboro’s Branden Soden had two doubles among his game-high three hits and Throneburg went two-for-three with two runs scored.
Guilford hosts Lynchburg College Thursday (4/10) at 3:00 p.m.
