Elon Baseball Routs High Point in Vs. Cancer Game

ELON, N.C. – The Elon baseball team scored six runs in the game’s first three innings en route to a 12-5 victory over the visiting High Point Panthers on Wednesday, April 9, at Latham Park. The game was Elon’s annual contest that helps raise funds for The Vs. Cancer Foundation which helps to fund cancer research. This year, the Phoenix raised over $14,000 – its highest total in three seasons.

Elon’s Sebastian Gomez and Tyler McVicar each drove in four runs in the Phoenix victory as the maroon and gold improved to 21-12. HPU fell to 19-14 with the setback.

Gomez went 3-for-4 at the dish while McVicar finished the night 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Elon’s four-run bottom of the third.

The Phoenix plated three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-run lead, 12-2, as McVicar’s two-run triple to right-center scored two in the fourth and Gomez’s double to right in the fifth scored a pair to give Elon a commanding lead.

HPU managed to score three in the ninth to make it a seven-run game, but Matt Harris finished the Panthers off in a six-pitcher effort for the Phoenix. Rookie Mike Krill (1-0) earned the win for Elon, the first of his collegiate career, after going four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Ryan Cooper ended the day 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Blaine Bower went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run, his first of the season. Quinn Bower had two hits and scored twice for the Phoenix in the win. Casey Jones extended his career-best hitting streak to 19 games folowing a 1-for-2 day at the plate.

The loss went to Will Resnik (0-1) who surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in just four innings.

Elon returns to Southern Conference play this weekend in a three-game set at Wofford.

High Point Baseball Falls On The Road at Elon, 12-5

ELON, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team dropped a 12-5 decision to Elon on Wednesday night in Elon, N.C. Freshman Chris Clare went 2-3 and with an RBI in the game.

“Sometimes you just get it handed to you and that is what happened tonight,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “You have to give Elon credit, they were on the attack and we didn’t have enough to get back in it. Our job now is to put this behind us and get ready for VMI this weekend.”

Junior Will Resnik took the loss for the Panthers, dropping to 0-1 on the season. Resnik pitched four innings and allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and a walk while striking out five. Freshman Sean Barry pitched the final three innings and allowed just one walk while striking out four.

Mike Krill earned his first win of the season for Elon with four scoreless innings of relief. Krill entered the game in the third and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out one. Tyler Manez started the game for the Phoenix ald allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in two innings of work.

Elon scored two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead on the Panthers. Sebastian Gomez drove in the first run with an RBI single before Casey Jones scored one batter later on a wild pitch.

High Point came right back with two runs in the second to tie the game at 2-2. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two hit batters and scored its first run of the game when junior Brady Williamson came home on a wild pitch. Freshman Chris Clare followed with an infield single up the middle to drive in sophomore Dominic Fazio and tie the game.

The Phoenix moved back in front in the third inning, scoring four runs in the frame to take a 6-2 lead. Three of the four Elon home runs came by way of the long ball as Tyler McVicar hit a two-run home run and Blaine Bower hit a solo home run.

Elon added three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to push its lead to 12-2. The Phoenix scored with a sacrifice fly by Jones and a two-run triple by McVicar in the fourth, then scored once on a wild pitch and got two runs on a double by Gomez in the fifth.

High Point scored three runs in the ninth to make the final score 12-5. Three-straight HPU batters were hit to load the bases ahead of Angelis who hit a single up the middle to drive in the first two runs. Redshirt-junior Blake Hutton then followed with a single through the right side to score the third and final run of the inning.

Angelis finished with two hits in the game, going 2-5 at the plate with two RBI. Five different HPU players scored a run including freshmen Peter Ripke and Zach Vandergrift who each scored the first runs of their collegiate careers.

Gomez led a group of four Elon batters who finished with multiple hits, going 304 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored.

High Point returns home to Williard Stadium this weekend when the team hosts VMI in a three-game conference series. The series begins on Friday, April 11, at 6 p.m.
