Elon Women’s Track and Field to Compete at UNC and N.C. A&T

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team will split and compete at two different locations this Saturday, April 12. The distance group will race at the Joe Hilton Invitational at North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., while the remainder of the team travels to North Carolina A&T for the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.

Last Time Out
Last Friday, April 4, Elon sent two members of the distance team to the prestigious Stanford Invitational. Senior Allyson Oram set a new school record in the 10,000-meters with a time of 34:49.59 while sophomore Tereza Novotna clocked in a new program and personal record time of 10:33.40 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The remainder of the team competed at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational on April 4-5. The Phoenix captured four event titles at the meet and also saw sophomore Simone Jackson set a new school record in the 100-meter dash. The Ellicott City, Md., native ran a time of 12.18 in the race, breaking Dana Cataldo’s previous school mark of 12.29.

Jackson was a member of the team’s 4×100-meter team that won the race with a time of 46.99, second-fastest time in school history. Sydney Griffin won the 100-meter hurdles crown with a time of 14.15 while Bria Bell was the champion in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.09. Sophomore Megan Kirschling won the high jump title after clearing the bar at 5’7” (1.70m).

Five in the Top-48 of NCAA East Qualifying List
Heading into this weekend and with a month left until the beginning of the NCAA qualifying period, the Phoenix currently has five athletes ranked in the top-48 of the NCAA East Qualifying performance list in their respective events, including two in the top-20. Kirschling is currently 15th on the performance list in the high jump while Oram is 16th in the 10,000-meters. Novotna (26th, 3,000-meter steeplechase), Griffin (34th, 100-meter hurdles) and Jennifer Esposito (38th, 400-meter hurdles) are also within reach of a NCAA qualifying berth.

The Phoenix will have a week off from competition before traveling to the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 26-27 in Spartanburg, S.C.
