College Baseball Finals – Guilford 10-15, William Peace 6-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seniors John Macon Smith and Corey Wallace bid farewell to McBane Field in style Saturday, combing for 10 hits and 12 runs batted in in Guilford College’s nonconference baseball sweep of visiting William Peace University Saturday. Smith went three-for-four with four RBI in the opener, a 10-6 Guilford victory. Wallace had two hits and five RBI in the Quakers’ 15-0 game-two triumph.

The victories on Guilford’s Senior Day extended Guilford’s winning streak to a season-high six games and moved their overall record to 17-18. The Pacers, in their first year as a varsity team, dropped to 1-9 against four-year schools.

The Quakers banged out 13 hits in seven innings and took advantage of five William Peace errors in the opener. Smith blasted a two-run home run in Guilford’s three-run third inning, which opened a 5-1 margin. He added an RBI triple with two out in the fourth inning and a run-scoring single in the sixth. Herc Ingels had two doubles and scored three times. Wallace added two hits and also scored three times. Lou Trosch (1-3) earned his first victory of the season with four innings of relief.

Ryan Klinedinst had two hits and an RBI for William Peace in game one. Starter Wes Dumford yielded five earned runs and struck out three through five innings.

Michael Whited’s fifth home run of the season opened the scoring in game two. His towering shot to left triggered the Quakers’ three-run second inning and they never looked back. Wallace’s three-run triple keyed a five-run fourth inning and his two-run, two-out double in the sixth was part of a six-run rally. Smith added three more hits and three RBI in the nightcap. Wallace and classmate Dan Ditota added two hits apiece. Junior Justin Morrison (3-1) earned the victory with five strikeouts over four innings of three-hit pitching.

Guilford closes the regular season with a stretch of four Old Dominion Athletic Conference games, beginning with Sunday’s (4/13) tilt at Emory & Henry College.
