College Softball Finals – Guilford 3–4, Emory & Henry 1–8

EMORY, Va. – Guilford College’s Maggie Shaffer collected her seventh complete game victory of the season as the Quakers split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Emory & Henry College Sunday afternoon. The Quakers took game one, 3-1, while the Wasps claimed the nightcap, 8-4.

Shaffer (10-6) gave up just one earned run on five hits while striking out four batters over seven innings in game one. The sophomore pitcher stranded seven Wasps on base throughout the game and fought back to retire the Wasps after allowing two runners on base with one out in the third and seventh innings. With two runners in scoring position and one out in the seventh inning, Shaffer induced a game-ending double play to seal the victory.

Rachel Howard finished the first game 2-for-4 with a RBI-single in the top of the third frame to start the Quakers’ two-run rally. Taylor Boyd capped the rally with a RBI on a ground out to first base.

Laura Hall added an insurance run in the top of the fifth stanza with a RBI-walk after a pair of singles in the inning.

Guilford took an early 1-0 lead after one inning of game two, but the Wasps countered in the bottom of the second inning with a five-run rally. Both teams traded two runs in the fourth inning with Emory & Henry adding to their three-run rally over two innings with one run in the bottom of the fifth stanza. Guilford posted one run in the seventh inning with runners on first and second before the Wasps retired the Quakers.

Taylor Boyd finished game two 3-for-4 with a RBI-single in the first inning to give the Quakers the early advantage.

Steffi Sides and Casey Snead each knocked one RBI-single a piece down the right field line in the top of the fourth inning to counter the Wasps’ five-run rally.

Laura Hall’s two-out RBI-single in the top of the seventh inning chipped away at the Wasp lead while giving the Quakers runners on first and second base with two outs.

The Wasps’ Jordan Chrisley led the Wasps in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI. Chrisley knocked a two-RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, bolstering the Wasps’ five-run rally. Chrisley added a RBI on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Roxanne Hillman went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI-singles for the Wasps in the second and fourth innings. Riley Pudney added to Emory & Henry’s five-run rally in the second inning with a RBI-single and drove in another run in the fifth frame with her second RBI single.

Casey Snead (4-5) took the loss for the Quakers, surrendering six earned runs on nine hits in three and two-thirds innings of work. Rebekah Langston relieved Snead in the fourth inning, throwing the final two and one-third innings, giving up one run on three hits while fanning two batters.

Brandy Bryant took the win for the Wasps, throwing six and two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on eleven hits. Hillman relieved Bryant with two outs in the seventh inning, giving up one hit.

Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 to maintain her ODAC-leading batting average (.561).

The Quakers (22-11, 7-9 ODAC) return to action Wednesday, hosting Bridgewater College in a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader at Haworth Field.
