HPU Men’s Golf Completes First Day At Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team is in 15th place after two rounds of the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. The Panthers shot a 299 in the opening round Monday morning, which was the team’s lowest score of the spring and topped it with a 298 in the day’s second round.

“We put up the two best rounds of the spring in a very tough field,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “I am happy to see the team playing well as we head in the Big South Tournament next week. Alex Thompson had 10 birdies in his first collegiate tournament, which is phenomenal. We need to keep focusing on the fundamentals and use tomorrow as another opportunity to get better.”

The Panthers carded a team score of 299 in the opening round and improved one stroke with a 298 in the afternoon.

Junior L.J. Georgetti led the Panthers sitting at three-over par on the day after shooting a two-over 74 in the first round and was three-over 75 in the second round. He is currently tied for 60th in the field with sophomore Tommy Dillon. Dillon shot a career-low 73 in the first round to lead HPU and followed with a 76 in the second round to tie Georgetti with a 149.

Freshman Jack Sides sat at six-over on the day after carding a 76 in the opening round and was one-over through 10 holes when play stopped. Freshman Alex Thompson shot an 80 in his first collegiate round and showed great improvement with a two-over par 74 in the second round. Sophomore McKay Tye posted a 76 in both rounds today.

Elon leads the team standings at 546 (274-272). The Phoenix were 30 strokes under par for the day. Elon’s John Somers and is the individual leader at -11.

High Point will return to Country Club of Spartanburg tomorrow to finish the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational.
