College Baseball News – Guilford’s Wallace Named ODAC Hitter of the Week

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College’s Corey Wallace (Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior (Southeastern C.C.)) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Baseball Hitter of the Week Award Monday. The announcement marks the second time Wallace has received the league’s weekly honor.

Wallace, a 6-1, 185-pound third baseman, hit .591 with a homer and 13 RBI in the Quakers’ 5-0 week that extended Guilford’s winning streak to seven, the team’s longest since 2005. He had two or more hits in four of the games, including a season-high four in the Quakers’ 11-2 league win over Emory & Henry College April 13. Wallace belted his league-leading ninth homer of the season in Guilford’s 9-6 win over crosstown-rival Greensboro College April 9. He finished with three hits and three RBI in the game. His three-run triple in the seventh inning tied the score in Guilford’s comeback victory over 26th-ranked Lynchburg College April 10. He was two-for-four in the game. Wallace had two hits in both seven-inning games of Guilford’s doubleheader sweep of visiting William Peace University April 12.

The week boosted Wallace’s batting average to .418, which ranks sixth in the league, in 35 games. He leads the ODAC in triples (6) and stands second in the loop in slugging percentage (.740), RBI (48) and at-bats (146). Wallace’s 61 hits stand third in the conference. His 48 RBI represent the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. His nine homers rank 12th.

Coach Nick Black’s ’02 Quakers (18-18, 8-9 ODAC) have three road games versus league foes this week, starting with Wednesday’s (4/16) tilt at Lynchburg. Guilford is in contention for one of six spots in the league’s postseason tournament, which runs April 24-27 in Lynchburg, Va. The Quakers close out the regular season Saturday (4/19) at Randolph-Macon College.
