College Softball Finals—Guilford 4–6, Bridgewater 0–4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maggie Shaffer threw a one-hitter in the first game of Guilford College’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater College Wednesday afternoon. Guilford took game one, 4-0, and collected the nightcap victory, 6-4.

Shaffer (11-6) held the Eagles without a hit for the first four and one-third innings, earning her eighth complete-game victory of the season. Bridgewater game one starting pitcher Brianna Cox hit a single into left field in the top of the fifth inning for the only hit Shaffer gave up in her start. Allowing only four base runners for the entire outing, the sophomore pitcher struck out three batters over seven innings.

Rachel Howard brought home three of the Quakers’ four runs in the bottom of the third inning, knocking a three-run home run into left field, her fourth home run of the season to boost the Quaker lead. Howard finished game one 2-for-2.

Cox (11-6) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out two.

Bridgewater took an early lead in the top of the first inning with two runs to lead off game two. The Quakers countered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Guilford would add three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, forcing Bridgewater game two starting pitcher Amanda Lutz (6-8) out of the game after throwing one inning plus. Bridgewater added two runs in the fifth before the Quakers held the Eagles without a hit for the rest of the game.

Marty Wilcox led the Quakers with a two-run home run to put Guilford on the board in the bottom of the first frame for her seventh home run of the season, leading the team. Wilcox finished game two 3-for-4 and finished the twinbill 5-for-7.

Howard added her fourth RBI of the afternoon in the Quakers’ second inning three-run rally with an infield single.

Steffi Sides and Casey Snead each finished game two 1-for-2 with a RBI-single a piece. Snead’s RBI-single capped the three-run rally in the first inning while Sides’ RBI-single capped the Quakers’ second inning three-run rally.

Bridgewater’s Brea Hinegardner connected on two home runs in game two, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI. Hinegardner brought home Bridgewater’s first two runs, knocking her first home run to left center field in the bottom of the first inning. Her second home run came in the fifth stanza, knocking the ball over the left field fence to cut the Quaker lead in half.

Casey Snead (5-5) took the win after throwing four and one-third innings, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits while striking out one batter. Calli Pastor picked up her first save of the season, throwing the final two and two-thirds innings, yielding no runs or hits while fanning one batter.

Haley Harris relieved Lutz in the second inning, throwing four innings and surrendering one earned run on five hits. Cox relieved Harris in the sixth inning, giving up one hit in one inning of work.

The Quakers travel to Southern Virginia University Friday afternoon to finish two games with the Knights with both games from the March 20th doubleheader being suspended due to darkness.
