Randleman was trying to grab their second Prospects Title in three years and the Tigers were going for their first under first-year head coach Jake Smith….Coach Clark Erskine, a former UNCG baseball player had his kids primed and they were ready for their trip to ‘The Ship’….Coach Erskine told us before the game that NewBridge Bank Park was his team’s Easter Vaction Destination and that the Phoenix came here to take the title home to Madison…..Big win for the Phoenix and this might just jump-start the rest of their season…..

Cole Aker and Jordan Zamrik combined to throw a one-hit shutout to send the Vikings into the championship game.

Cory Everett hit a leadoff double in the first inning, but that was all the Wildcats (10-5) could muster off the hard-throwing Aker. The junior righty struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and finished with eight in six innings.

NW Guilford (14-1) scored three times in the first and Jesse Juday increased the lead to 5-0 with a solo homer to lead off the fourth. Juday finished 2-for-4 and was one of four Vikings with multiple hits.

Northwest Guilford from Tuesday in Wilmington:
www.starnewsvarsity.comTraveling 229 miles from Greensboro to Wilmington on Tuesday didn’t adversely affect the Northwest Guilford baseball team.

The visiting Vikings (13-3) from the Piedmont scored three first-inning runs and pitched their way out of jams en route to a 9-5 rain-shortened win over Hoggard at the Ashley Spring Break Tournament.

“They came out swinging like crazy,” Hoggard coach Jeep St. Ledger said. “You have to give them the credit for that. They hit the heck out of the ball.”

Two singles and a pair of doubles gave NW Guilford an early 3-0 lead. They added another on a single, error and another RBI base hit from Cole Aker, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs on the game.

While NW Guilford was coming up with key hits, the hometown Vik-ings (8-4) couldn’t push any runners across the plate. They left seven runners on base through the first four innings.

“Sometimes that’s baseball,” St. Ledger said. “You don’t get the two-out hit when you need it.”

NW Guilford starter Colson Everett worked out of first-and-third jams in the third and fourth innings.
