College Baseball Final—Guilford 8, Lynchburg 6 (11 innings)

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Corey Wallace’s one-out RBI-single broke a 6-6 tie in the eleventh inning to lead Guilford College past Lynchburg College, 8-6, in Thursday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest. The victory extends the Quakers’ (19-18, 9-9 ODAC) winning streak to eight games.

Guilford forced extra innings after seeing a four-run lead turn into a two-run deficit in the second inning when Lynchburg posted all six of their runs one half inning after the Quakers produced a four-run rally in the top half of the frame. Guilford posted one run in the fourth inning and again in the seventh inning to tie the game, 6-6. After the Quakers left two runners on base in the tenth inning, Guilford produced a two-run rally to seal the victory.

Guilford’s pitching combined to scatter seven hits after Lynchburg’s second inning rally. Lou Trosch gave up one earned run on seven hits while fanning two batters in a four inning no-decision start. Trosch only surrendered one hit in his final two innings of work.

The Quaker bullpen kept the door shut on the Hornet offense as Chad Wagoner gave up no runs on three hits in two and one-third innings of work. Justin Morrison (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian Academy) relieved Wagoner for two and two-thirds innings of two-hit work. Borja Jones-Berasaluce (3-3) pitched the two extra innings, allowing just one hit and fanning one batter to pick up the win.

Michael Whited (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) led Quaker bats with three RBI on his 1-for-4 afternoon. Whited drove in the Quakers’ first run in the second inning four-run rally. Whited brought home the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to center field. The shortstop added his third RBI of the day on a fielder’s choice in the eleventh inning to produce an insurance run.

Wallace finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with his game-winning RBI in the eleventh inning and a double. Wallace’s three hits on the afternoon extends his season-best hitting streak to 17 games.

Lynchburg’s Joe Rogers led the Hornets, finishing 3-for-5 with a second-inning home run and three RBI. Rob Tomasulo hit the other Lynchburg home run in the second inning, finishing 3-for-5 with one RBI.

The Quakers wrap up their 2014 regular season at Randolph-Macon for an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
