GC Pride Baseball Picks Up Conference Win at Averett

DANVILLE, VA — The Greensboro College baseball team opened their final USA South series of the season on Friday afternoon. The Pride traveled just a short distance up the highway to faceoff with the Cougars of Averett University. In the opening game of the series, Greensboro

The Pride was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning of play. Freshman designated hitter Andrew Toney put a ball over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run scoring Brandon Soden from second base. The Cougars however were able to cut the Greensboro lead in half with one run in the bottom half of the inning.

After the Cougars pulled to within one run at 2-1, James Feldmann hit a leadoff triple in the third inning before Kyle Willard brought him across the plate making the score 3-1. Greensboro College was able to plate one more run in the inning as Brandon Soden picked up his first RBI of the game scoring Willard from third base pushing the lead to 4-1.

The Cougars would once again score a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning of play cutting the Greensboro lead to two runs at 4-2. Once the Cougars brought the score to 4-2, the Pride was able to add the games next four runs to extend their lead out to 8-2. In the four run span Jon Krecicki, Kyle Willard, and J.P Lisk each accounted for at least one RBI. However the Cougars were able to score four runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but Jeff Waring was able to come in and secure the 8-6 victory for the Pride.

J.P Lisk collected four of the 13 Greensboro hits on the day while Kyle Willard and Jon Krecicki collected two hits apiece. Kristopher Peeden picked up the win for the Pride tossing seven innings while only giving up four hits. Jeff Waring pitched the last third of the ninth inning recording his second save of the season.

With the win, the Pride’s overall record improves to 6-27 overall and 4-20 in USA South play. The Greensboro College baseball team will return to action on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the three game set with the Cougars. The first pitch of the double header is set for 12:00 PM.
