GREENSBORO, N.C. – Adam Fiore scored three goals and added five assists in Guilford College’s 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over visiting Shenandoah University Saturday. The Quakers’ Thomas Deane made a season-high 20 saves in goal as the Quakers won for the third time in four games.
Guilford (8-6, 2-6 ODAC) finished the game on a 5-1 run after the Hornets (6-10, 2-6 ODAC) rallied from three goals down to tie the game at 6-6 midway through the third quarter.
After Shenandoah’s Drew Brooks forced the game’s fourth tie with the Hornets’ sixth goal, Fiore set up Andrew McDonagh’s tally with 5:10 left in the third that marked the go-ahead goal. Fiore scored the eventual game-winner a little over a minute later and fed Chase Rogers’ goal 34 seconds later for a quick 9-6 Quakers’ edge.
Guilford’s Rufus Terry scored 14 seconds into the fourth quarter, which capped a 4-0 spurt and opened a 10-6 Quakers’ lead. Shenandoah’s Stephen LaTona scored from Brooks at the 11:04 mark, but it was the last goal Shenandoah scored as Deane recorded seven fourth-quarter saves.
Dylan Haupt scored three times and Daniel Hughey chipped in with two goals and an assist. Duncan Fitzgerald played an important role, winning five-of-eight second-half face-offs, which helped the Quakers control possession.
LaTona paced the Hornets with three goals and Brooks finished with a goal and three assists. Tilghman Sanders added a goal and an assist. He also won 10-of-17 face-offs and picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Rookie goaltender Ben Judy made 12 saves and Eric Hobby caused five turnovers.
The Quakers close the season next Saturday (4/26) versus visiting Randolph College in a 1:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
