College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford 5, Greensboro 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College downed Greensboro College, 5-1, in a nonconference men’s golf dual match Wednesday at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center. The teams used a medal-match play format where the low 18-hole score in head-to-head individual competition scored a point for the team.

Playing the school’s first dual match since 1977, the Quakers posted wins in five of the six flights on the par-72, 7,125-yard East Course. Guilford rookie Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) carded the day’s low round, a one-over 73, in his five-shot win over Greensboro’s Greg Pappas in the number-one flight.

Playing in the fifth flight, Guilford’s Nick Shedd shot a four-over 76 for a nine-stroke win over the Pride’s Brian Critzer. Teammates Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) both shot 77 to win the second and third flights over Greensboro’s John Grimes (83) and Chris Cox (79), respectively. Guilford’s Mitch Robinette claimed the number-six match with Jack Hagyard, 78-86.

Greensboro’s Nick Peoples edged Guilford’s Drew Thompson, 78-79, to account for the Pride (0-1) point.

Coach Corey Maggard’s Quakers (1-0) open defense of their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament title Sunday (4/27) at the Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C. Guilford is ranked sixth in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll and seventh in the most recent Golfstat.com Head-to-Head Relative Rankings.

In conjunction with the Greensboro Sports Commission, Guilford will co-host the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships May 13-16 at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center.
