College Softball Finals – Guilford 9–2, Randolph 1–5

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Guilford College split a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Randolph College. The Quakers took game one, 9-1, in five innings at Guilford’s Haworth Field while the WildCats took the nightcap at Proehlific Park in Greensboro, 5-2. The nightcap marked Guilford’s first night home game in program history.

The Quakers jumped on the WildCats in the bottom of the second inning of game one, posting a five-run rally to claim the lead they would hold for the rest of the game. The Quakers loaded the bases with no outs, scoring two runs before the first out was recorded and two more runs with two outs. Randolph countered in the top of the third inning when Rachel Hickman knocked a home run off the left field foul pole for Randolph’s only hit of the game to put the WildCats on the board. The Quakers countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning and closed the door in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the fifth, producing three run rally to seal the win.

Maggie Shaffer (12-6) collected her ninth complete-game victory of the season, striking out six batters while walking two in her second consecutive one-hitter. Shaffer added one RBI on a hit-by-pitch for the game’s first run while scoring three runs.

Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) finished game one 1-for-2 with two RBI. Hayes’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second drove in the third run in the rally for the inning’s first out. The senior drove home the lone run in the bottom of the third with a RBI-single.

Marty Wilcox went 1-for-4 with the game-finishing three-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete the victory.

With Haworth Field lacking lights, both teams took a ten-minute drive in between games over to Proehlific Park to compete in the Quakers’ first night home game in program history. Both teams went scoreless in the first four innings with the WildCats retiring the Quakers in the second inning with the bases loaded. Guilford posted one run a piece in the fourth and fifth innings with Randolph countering in the sixth inning to tie the game, 2-2. The WildCats produced a three-run rally in the top of the seventh and held the Quakers in the bottom half of the frame to secure the win.

Brooks Bray finished game two 3-for-3 with the solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Quakers on the board. Bray finished the doubleheader 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Laura Hall’s single in the bottom of the fifth frame produced a run after a fielding error in left field advanced Hall two more bases. The sophomore center fielder also finished the doubleheader 4-for-5 after finished game one 3-for-3.

Randolph’s Hunter Glavé connected on a two-run home run to center field to tie the game in the top of the six inning for her only hit of the evening.

Rebekah Langston (9-2) took the loss for the Quakers, surrendering three runs on four hits while fanning four batters in six-plus innings. Casey Snead relieved Langston after the first batter in the seventh stanza, giving up two runs on two hits.
