Elon Men’s Baseball Phoenix Downed in Finale at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run fifth inning and pulled away from Elon as the Spartans claimed a 13-4 victory in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference baseball series on Sunday afternoon.

After Elon (25-19, 11-10 SoCon) had taken a 2-1 lead in the third thanks to a Quinn Bower single and aCasey Jones sacrifice fly, UNCG (20-19, 7-8) scored the next 10 runs of the game. The Spartans tied it at two in the fourth before striking for five runs, including three on a homer off the bat of Hunter King, in the fifth to claim the lead for good.

UNCG added four in the sixth before the Phoenix scored on a Jones infield single and a bases-loaded walk to Sebastian Gomez. The Spartans tacked on two unearned runs in the eighth.

Elon’s offense tallied 10 hits, including three from Andy Moore.

Jake Stalzer (5-3) took the loss after he gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings.

The win went to Dylan Thompson (2-3) who was charged with four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.

With the loss, Elon was swept in a SoCon series for the first time since March of 2010.

The Phoenix is slated to be back home on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game against Coastal Carolina.
