HPU Men’s Track Gets Two Wins at Liberty Twilight Qualifier

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The High Point University men’s track & field team had a pair of winners at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Thursday in Lynchburg, Va. Senior Jacob Smith won the 1,500-meter and junior Christian Spaulding won the javelin.

Smith led six Panthers in the 1,500-meter, running a career-best time of 3:46.51. Sophomore Paul O’Donoghue ran a huge career best of 3:53.83 to place sixth. He shattered his previous best of 3:58.68.

Junior Jeff LaCoste placed ninth in the 1,500-meter in 3:55.29 and senior Patrick Crawford was 11th in a career-best 3:55.69. Sophomore Paddy Grandinali took 13th in a career-best 3:57.09 and junior Chris Colo took 19th in a career-best 4:02.79.

Spaulding won the javelin with a throw of 66.16 meters (217-1) on his first attempt. In the pole vault, sophomore Austin Miller placed fourth with a clearance of 4.65 meters (15-3).

Sophomore Dennis Crawford took third in the 110-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.11. In the preliminaries, Crawford ran a legal time of 14.32, which was just off his career best of 14.28.

Sophomore Will Narramore took fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump for the Panthers. He leapt a distance of 14.09 meters (46-2.75) in the triple jump and 6.47 meters (21-2.75) in the long jump.

High Point is back in action next weekend at the Virginia Challenge on Friday and Saturday, and the Aggie Last Chance on Sunday.
