Wyndham Championship 75th Anniversary Celebration Joins Winston-Salem’s Crosby Scholars Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, the Wyndham Championship is the presenting sponsor of the Crosby Scholars Invitational at Bermuda Run Country Club on May 20, the tournament announced today. The 75th anniversary Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 11-17, 2014 at Sedgefield Country Club.

The 10th annual Crosby Scholars Invitational, a “mini-reincarnation” of The Crosby, is a golf tournament in which teams play in the name of a Scholar. Through its sponsorship of this important event, the Wyndham will salute its 75th anniversary and the history of the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event, founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open. The event kicks off with a dinner Monday evening, May 19 at Old Towne Golf Club in Winston-Salem. Tournament day begins with the Breakfast of Champions, set for 8 a.m., where sponsors, community leaders, celebrities, volunteers and students gather at Bermuda Run Country Club. The Crosby Scholars Invitational has raised more than $1 Million for the Crosby Scholars Program since its inception. Mrs. Katheryn Crosby, wife of the late Bing Crosby, will attend this year’s event.

“The Crosby Scholars Program does a tremendous amount of good for more than 8,000 Forsyth County students,” program co-founder Paul Fulton said. “This event is integral to an innovative, long-term funding strategy developed by the Board of Directors of the Crosby Scholars Program. We are having great success enlisting sponsors and celebrities to participate in this one-day mini version of the original Crosby Golf Tournament. This golf tournament is a great way to let businesses and individuals learn more about the impact of the program on their employees’ children and to contribute to its continued success.”

A longtime beneficiary of the Wyndham Championship’s charitable efforts, the Crosby Scholars Community Partnership helps students in Forsyth County public middle and high schools prepare academically, personally and financially for college admission and other post-secondary opportunities best suited to a student’s needs, aptitudes and dreams. Crosby Scholars is a partnership of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the United Way of Forsyth County, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and The Winston-Salem Foundation.

With a 21-year history of providing academic training, financial aid and college application workshops, advisory services, college tours and Last Dollar Grant scholarships, Crosby Scholars serves more than 8,000 students each year. The program has awarded more than $4 Million in grants helping students attend more than 80 different colleges.

“We are proud to take our 75th anniversary celebration to Forsyth County for the Crosby Scholars Program,” Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said. “The Crosby Scholars Invitational is a wonderful event that draws on the strength of the Crosby family and their deep history in golf tournaments and raising money for charitable organizations. From the original Crosby Clambake at Pebble Beach, which began in 1937, the year before the first GGO, the Crosby family has been supporting programs that truly make a difference. Supporting this event is a perfect salute to our 75th anniversary.”

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2014 and contested annually on the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 and is the sixth-oldest event on the PGA TOUR excluding the Majors.
