GREENSBORO — Blake Brown’s drive into the night sky didn’t clear the fence in right-center field by much.

But it did make it over the 362-foot sign. And it did count for a three-run home run.

Ramon Del Orbe watched helplessly from the pitcher’s mound. He adjusted his oversized cap with the hard plastic shell hidden inside — protection for his surgically repaired skull — and held up his glove, asking the umpire for a new baseball.

The home run didn’t matter. Not one bit.

Because Del Orbe had already won. Simply by trotting out from the bullpen to the mound at NewBridge Bank Park and throwing his first sinking, two-seam fastball, Del Orbe had won.
