HPU’s Smith Runs 3:44 in 1,500 at Wolfpack Last Chance

RALEIGH, N.C. — Senior Jacob Smith ran a career-best 3:44.50 in the 1,500-meter, the second-best time in program history, to lead the High Point University men’s track & field team at the Wolfpack Last Chance meet on Friday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Smith’s time of 3:44.50 was just off the HPU record of 3:43.99 by Taylor Milne set in 2005 and Smith’s time was equivalent to approximately 4:02 in the mile. Milne went on to represent Canada in the Olympics in 2008.

Smith’s previous career best in the 1,500-meter was 3:46.51 set on May 1 at the Liberty Twilight meet.

Also on Friday, sophomore Dennis Crawford was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40 and senior Evan Emery placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.56.

In the field events, redshirt-junior Max Coleman took third in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters (21-11). Sophomore Austin Miller placed seventh in the pole vault, clearing 4.77 meters (15-7.75).

High Point is wrapping up its outdoor season this weekend, with several competitors expected to advance to the NCAA Preliminary May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla.
