College Football News – Guilford Adds Six More Newcomers for 2014 Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head football coach Chris Rusiewicz announced the intention of six new incoming students who intend to play football for the Quakers Thursday. The six have made their deposits to the college and will enroll in classes beginning in August. The group of commitments increases Rusiewicz’s fourth recruiting class to 30 students.

Jordan Cuthbertson (New Bern, N.C) and his twin brother, Julian, are headed to Guilford after both lettered all four years at Havelock High School under former Quakers’ quarterback Jim Bob Bryant. The pair helped the Rams go 47-1 and win three consecutive 3-A state championships from 2011-13. Jordan, a 5-8, 150-pound defensive back, earned Second Team All-Coastal Conference honors, and led the team in interceptions in 2013. He was a two-sport athlete and earned all-conference recognition in basketball. Cuthbertson performed well in the classroom, earning All-Academic honors, as well as induction into the National Honor Society. Jordan plans to study sport management at Guilford.

Julian Cuthbertson was also a four-year football letterwinner at Havelock. The 5-8, 155-pound safety led the 2013 team in fumble recoveries (4) and solo tackles (33), and ranked second in pass deflections (9). Cuthbertson was a two-sport athlete who also lettered in basketball for two years. He earned All-Coastal 3A honors on defense in football and was second-team all-conference pick in basketball. Cuthbertson also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 4.0 or higher grade point average all four years. A member of the National Honor Society, he plans to study business management at Guilford.

Jamar Harrington (Richlands, N.C) lettered four years at Richlands High School under head coach Justin Snider. The 6-0, 190-pound running back earned 3-A East Coast Conference Player of the Week honors and was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player. Harrington, a three-sport athlete, also lettered four years in basketball along with three years in track. Harrington intends to study health sciences at Guilford with aspirations in athletic training.

Demetrius Jones (Charlotte, N.C) lettered one year at Butler High School under head coach Brian Hales. A 6-0, 190-pound cornerback, Jones helped his team win the 2013 Southwestern Conference championship. He also lettered four years in basketball, winning the Bulldogs’ Defensive Player of the Year Award. Jones plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice at Guilford.

Tavon Strayhorn (New Bern, N.C) lettered three years at New Bern High School under head coach Robert Curlings Jr. The 5-7, 220-pound defensive tackle earned 2013 Second Team All-Area honors from the Sun Journal. Strayhorn helped the Bears win the 2012 4A state championship. He set the team’s bench press record with a lift of 405 pounds. He intends to study criminal justice at Guilford.

Blake Wilson (Marietta, Ga.) lettered four years at Lassiter High School under head coach Jep Irwin. A 5-11, 195-pound receiver, Wilson helped his team win the Region 5 championship in 2012 and 2013. He earned all-region football honors and also lettered three years in lacrosse. Wilson plans to study business management at Guilford.

The Quakers finished the 2013 season with a 6-4 overall record, their best since 2007. Guilford could return as many as 18 starters and opens the 2014 campaign against cross-town rival Greensboro College in the Gate City Soup Bowl Sept. 6.
