Freshman Mike Shawaryn pitched shutout seven innings and third baseman Jose Cuas had two hits and drove in three runs as Maryland extended the nation’s second-longest winning streak to 11 in a row (Canisius 17) with a 5-3 win over second-seeded Florida State.

With the win the Terps have now won two ACC Tournament games for the first time since 1999, and only the fourth time overall … the Terps are now 19-51 (.271) in ACC Tournament play while the Seminoles drop toe 64-39 (.621).

The lower-seeded team has won six of the first nine ACC Tournament games.

Friday’s game marked the 76th meeting between the two teams in a series that began in 1965 … Florida State leads the series 68-8.

In three starts this season against Top 10 opponents, Maryland freshman right-hander Mike Shawaryn is 2-0 with a 0.42 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings … Shawaryn leads the ACC in wins with 10.

In their first two ACC Tournament games, Terrapin starting pitchers are 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA having allowed only three earned runs on 12 hits in 15 innings.

Florida State’s Mike Martin is tied with Clemson’s Bill Wilhelm (1973-1993) for the most ACC Tournament wins with 64.

Maryland third baseman Jose Cuas drove in three runs with two hits, including a double, in three at bats … in his last 14 games, Cuas has six multi-hit games.

Maryland second baseman Brandon Lowe went 2-for-3 and raised his season batting to .344 and moved into tie with NC State’s Brett Austin for second in the league’s batting race … Lowe has had at least one hit in 12 of his last 15 games.
