Eight-Run Seventh Powers HiToms’ First CPL Win

THOMASVILLE, NC – Alec Paradowski and Glen Batson led the way offensively, combining for five RBI as the High Point-Thomasville HiToms notched their first Coastal Plain League win of the year over the Asheboro Copperheads 13-5.

After scoring their first run in the bottom of the first, the HiToms (1-2) used back-to-back hits to start the bottom of the second and put runners on the corners. Then back-to-back errors by Asheboro shortstop Brandon Krieg scored two of the HiToms’ four runs that inning before Alec Paradowski (sophomore, Wofford) followed with a RBI single and Spencer Mahoney (junior, Valparaiso) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

In that crucial bottom of the seventh inning, a single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs for Glen Batson (redshirt freshman, Clemson) to drive a two-run single up the middle. The rally kept coming as James Fowlkes (sophomore, USC Upstate) and Jared Allen (junior, Middle Tennessee State) each followed with a RBI single of his own. After another walk to load the bases for the third time in the frame, Matt Vernon (freshman, NC State) and Bradley Morton (junior, Appalachian State) each notched RBI singles before Paradowski capped the HiToms’ scoring with a two-run single.

Matthew Milburn (sophomore, Wofford) earned his first win of the season, going five-and-two-thirds innings allowing four runs (three earned) and five hits, striking out eight.

The HiToms head to Asheboro (2-2) to face the Copperheads for the second straight game – the third this week – tomorrow night at McCrary Park. First pitch is at 7:00pm.
