HPU’s Emery Advances To Quarterfinals At NCAA Track and Field Preliminary

Senior Evan Emery advanced to the quarterfinals of the 100-meter dash to lead the High Point University men’s track & field team in the first day of the NCAA Preliminary at North Florida on Thursday in Jacksonville, Fla. Emery and three others will continue competition on Friday.

Emery ran a time of 10.58 into a slight headwind in the first round of the 100-meter dash and finished 20th overall. He advanced to the quarterfinals based on his time. He has a season best time of 10.38 and a career-best of 10.31 and will compete in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The top three from each quarterfinal plus next best three times advanced to the NCAA semifinals in Eugene, Oregon.

Also on Thursday, junior Christian Spaulding placed 29th in the javelin. His best distance of 61.75 meters (202-7) came on his first attempt.

Along with Emery on Friday, sophomore Dennis Crawford and seniors Jacob Smith and Patrick Crawford will be on the track.

Dennis Crawford competes in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles on Friday at 5 p.m. He is ranked 38th overall in the event with his season-best time of 14.11. The top three from each heat plus the next six fastest times advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Smith and Patrick Crawford will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Smith has a career best of 8:47.09 and a season best of 8:57.46. Crawford has a season and career best of 8:57.45.
