Nine-Run First Knocks Out HiToms

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Zach Daly and Weston Lawing each drove in two runs as the Gastonia Grizzlies rode a first inning outburst to victory against the High Point-Thomasville HiToms 9-1 on Saturday.

Starting pitcher Chase Cunningham (jr., Belmont) struggled out of the gate. After an error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases to open the game, Gastonia (6-3) left-fielder Weston Lawing smacked a two-run double to left center to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Then designated hitter Chris Robinson and first-baseman Kane Barrow followed with consecutive RBI singles to double the HiToms’ (4-5) deficit to four. After two straight singles scored a run and loaded the bases yet again, Gastonia center-fielder Zach Daly capped Gastonia’s offense with a two-run double to right center that knocked Cunningham out of the game. The HiToms’ Jared Allen (jr., Middle Tennessee State) scratched across the team’s only run with a RBI fielder’s choice.

The HiToms look to turn the page Sunday afternoon as they host the Martinsville Mustangs in the third game of their five-game home stand. First pitch is at 5 P.M.
