Sakata has the lead at the FJ Invitational

Sakata paced the field with a 64, one stroke off the tournament record low round

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dean Sakata of Diamond Bar, California, leads the first round of the FJ Invitational, after carding a 6-under-par 64 on the Donald Ross Course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sakata recorded six birdies and an eagle during the first round to top the field. Sakata started off hot shooting 4-under-par with two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, followed by a 2-under-par on the back nine. The recent graduate of Diamond Bar High School was added to the field June 6th, just four days before the FJ Invitational began. Despite narrowly missing the tournament-record low round, he knows the competitive nature of the field and doesn’t want to be overconfident because of his first-round performance.

“I’m not going to back down,” Sakata said. ”I just want to play consistent, see how the putts roll tomorrow and go from there.”

Charles Kim of Cedar Park, Texas, fired a 5-under-par 65 to finish the round in second. Playing in his first FJ Invitational, Kim shot a 5-under-par 30 on the front nine, the lowest front-nine total of all competitors. Kim knows he is playing with an elite group of golfers and was pleased with his first-round finish.

“It’s an honor to play out here,” Kim said. “This is my first invitational with the AJGA so it was nice to compete with all of these nice players and be close to the top of the leaderboard.”

Five players are tied for third, including Chandler Phillips of Huntsville, Texas, Austin Connelly of Irving, Texas, Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Cheng Jin of Singapore, and Benjamin Baxter of Flower Mound, Texas, all shooting 4-under-par 66.

Isaiah Logue of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, posted a 3-under-par 67 to place solo eighth heading into the second round. William Register of Burlington, North Carolina, and Nick Hardy of Northbrook, Illinois, are tied for ninth after shooting 2-under-par 68.

Second-round tee times will run from 7-11:50 a.m. off No. 1 at Sedgefield Country Club—Donald Ross Course. For more information about the FJ Invitational, please contact Tournament Headquarters at (770) 601-5196

About the AJGA

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 6,000 members from all 50 states and more than 45 foreign countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
