Connelly notches fourth AJGA win at FJ Invitational
Connelly wins the FJ Invitational by six strokes
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Austin Connelly of Irving, Texas, posted a final-round 3-under-par 67, for a tournament total of 271 to win the FJ Invitational by six strokes.
Connelly, a rising senior, ran away from the field in the final round, starting off hot on the front nine shooting 3-under-par 32. On No. 2, the four-time AJGA Champion was up only one stroke, but quickly changed that, posting four birdies on Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 9. Connelly seemed to be unflappable on the back nine, rolling in pars on seven of nine holes. He would finish the back nine at even-par 35. This win is Connelly’s first AJGA Invitational win.
“I won my first two when I was fourteen, it’s a lot different,” Connelly said. “This win is so much better, it just feels good. The AJGA is the best junior golf organization in the world and this means so much.”
“[To win] is awesome, especially on Father’s Day [weekend],” Connelly said. “It was just a great time and I can’t remember my parents ever missing a tournament.”
KK Limbhasut of Loma Linda, California, posted a 3-under-par 67 and a tournament total of 277 to finish in solo second. Limbhasut tried to mount a comeback on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10 and 13, but ended up six strokes off the lead.
Limbhasut, Connelly, Cooper Dossey of Austin, Texas, and Cameron Champ of Sacramento, California, each earned Scotty Cameron Putter Cover Awards for finishing with low final-round scores of 3-under-par 67s.
Champ, Tyler Moore of Escondido, California, Jose Montano of Bradenton, Florida, Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Isaiah Logue of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, and Nick Hardy of Northbrook, Illinois, all tied for third with 281 tournament totals.
Dean Sakata of Diamond Bar, California, and Norway’s Andreas Halvorsen of St. Augustine, Florida, both tied for 10th with tournament totals of 282.
