Asheboro Walks Off Against HiToms

ASHEBORO, N.C. – G.K. Young ripped the game-winning two-run single to left field Tuesday night as the Asheboro Copperheads notched a come-from-behind win over the High Point-Thomasville HiToms 8-7.

Asheboro (12-12) took an early 1-0 lead on Austin Bossart’s RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The HiToms (10-12) answered in the top of the third when Logan Taylor (fr., Louisville) singled, took second on a wild pitch and stole third before scoring the tying run on Alec Paradowski’s (so., Wofford) sacrifice fly. The Copperheads grabbed the lead back an inning later on a bases loaded walk from HiToms starter Pat Dyer (jr., Akron) giving Asheboro a 2-1 lead.

However, the HiToms responded in powerful fashion. In the top of the fifth with a runner at first, Nick Dini (jr., Wagner) hit a two-run home run to left field giving the HiToms a 3-2 lead. Three batters later, Bradley Morton (so., Appalachian State) drilled a RBI single to center field to push the HiToms’ lead to three.

After adding a run off a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, High Point-Thomasville got some extra insurance a frame later when Des Roberts (rs jr., UNC-Charlotte) ripped a RBI single of his own to center and the HiToms’ lead stretched to 6-2. Jared Allen (jr., Middle Tennessee State) added a solo shot to right field in the ninth.

But trailing 7-2 with their backs to the wall, Asheboro came back.

After Copperhead centerfielder J.D Whetsel hit a one-out single, Anthony Marks dropped a bunt single down the third base line when a throwing error from third allowed Whetsel to score and moved Marks to third to make it a 7-3 game. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Austin Bossart was hit by a pitch scoring a run. After him, Connor Owings reached on a RBI infield single, bringing Asheboro within two, 7-5.

After the second bases loaded walk of the inning narrowed the HiToms’ lead to 7-6, Copperhead first baseman G.K. Young ripped a walk-off two-run single and Asheboro completed the comeback winning 8-7. It’s only the second time in six games that the Copperheads have bested the HiToms.

The HiToms return home to Finch Field to face the Martinsville Mustangs Wednesday in a Shuler Meats Dollar Night doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M.
