Powerade State Games Kicks Off Final Weekend in Charlotte
The Games Move to the Triangle for 2015 and 2016
DURHAM, NC, – The Powerade State Games of North Carolina kicks off the final weekend of a two year run in Charlotte today. The High School Lacrosse Showcase will be held tonight at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. The Boys & Girls High School Basketball tournament starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday at the brand new Carolina Courts location in Indian Trail. The Charlotte Region will host six other Powerade State Games competitions over the weekend: BMX (Hornet’s Nest Park), Adult Lacrosse (Elon Park), Adult Ice Hockey (Extreme Ice Center and Pineville Ice House), Adult Softball (Bradford Park), Rugby (Matthews Sportsplex) and Swimming (Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center).
The early estimates show over 13,000 athletes participating in this year’s edition of the Powerade State Games. North Carolina Amateur Sports, the organizer of the event, is excited to be headed back to the Triangle for the 2015 & 2016 Games. Raleigh, Cary and Durham will all host competition over the next two years, which includes the 30th Anniversary edition of the Games in 2016. “After a successful two years in Charlotte, we are looking forward to bringing the Games back to the Triangle for the first time in eight years,” said Chuck Hobgood, President of NCAS. “The State Games started in 1986, and the Triangle has hosted fifteen editions of the event. Our familiarity and experience hosting events in Raleigh, Durham and Cary will allow for a seamless transition from Charlotte to the Triangle.” The Powerade State Games were last in the Triangle in 2005 & 2006, when Cary hosted the event.
The Games will move to the Piedmont Triad Region in 2017 & 2018 and then back to Charlotte in 2019 & 2020.
