Local Greensboro Area Baseball for Today(6/27/14):Fletcher Donnell, Bob Doss and others

Final:Asheville 8, Greensboro Grasshoppers 1….Greensboro NABA:Postponed….
Schedules are down below, but just a few notes to get us running today:
*****Lots of people still talking about how Cliff Craven used to play the semipro ball for teams like Sonny’s Funnies and others for the Pond Giants and Ray Crawford Sr. used to be out there too back in the day with those semipro teams that kept the dirt, dust and grass hot on the weekends…Fletcher Donnell might just be the best baseball man that this town has ever seen and he needs to be in the Hall of Fame and he would join Bob Doss there, one of the finest promoters of the sport and true baseball men that ever walked the lines at Stoner-White Stadium…(Huge loss when we lost Bob Doss and you can see it more today than ever before.) Johnny Smith(Guilford Patriots) is working hard to bring a Greensboro Yankees baseball reunion to Greensboro in July and this ought to be a great event and they are planning on bringing back Jim Bouton and many other ‘G’ Yanks legends….Speaking about good baseball man, Sonny Cashion is a name we do not need to forget…Sonny left his mark and he made his point….*****

  1. Andy I had the pleasure of playing for Both Sonny, and Fletcher they both should be in the Hall of Fame.
Bob Doss is a legend when it came to helping young kids stay involved in baseball. When you mention these three men I have flash backs about the good old days playing against the Pond Giants, playing in the Roxboro Semi Pro tournament, and traveling with Sonny to Wichita Kansas for the NBC national baseball congress. GREAT MEN GEAT MENTORS

  2. I think it’s a good thing when we can bring back those memories..

I have talked to Cliff Craven about it and today’s heat and humidity takes many of those players back to a Saturday afternoon in Roxboro when you had a Doubleheader with the first game getting going at around 2pm in the dead heat of the day….Lots of Saturday and Sunday Doubleheaders back in those days…

I was out the fields working and living off of the land(gardens/hayfields/manure spreading) myself so I wasn’t able to experience it, but I love to hear about those days and used to love to see the newspaper on Monday mornings when they would run some of the scores from the Sonny’s Funnies and Pond Giants games…

Didn’t even know who those teams were back then, but it was different and I did know many of the names from those teams…

For some, the memories are all that is left and with them being good memories, let’s spread them around every now and again….
