Five-Run Fifth Backs Koerner in HiToms Win

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Weston Wilson and Jared Allen combined for seven RBIs Friday as the High Point-Thomasville HiToms defeated the Gastonia Grizzlies (17-9) for the first time this season by a score of 10-2.

The HiToms (12-14) were all over Grizzlies starter Enrique Sosa (0-1) early. With two runners on and two out in the bottom of the first inning, Weston Wilson (fr., Clemson) smacked a RBI single to center. Jared Allen (jr., Middle Tennessee State) followed with a RBI double of his own to give the HiToms a 2-0 lead.

High Point-Thomasville doubled its lead in the bottom of the third when Josh Ingram (jr., Central Oklahoma) smacked a RBI double to right-center and Wilson followed him with a RBI groundout.

With a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth, the HiToms put the game away.

Ingram hit a solo homer to right field leading off the frame. Then after a Des Roberts (rs jr., UNC-Charlotte) double, Wilson struck again with a RBI double for the third of the four runs he drove in. Jared Allen followed him with the big blow of the frame, a two-run round-tripper to right field. Immediately after, Austin Crutcher (jr., Bellarmine) doubled to left field and later scored on a throwing error for the team’s fifth run of the inning.

Brody Koerner (so., Clemson – 1-1) pitched a strong seven innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

The HiToms hit the road Saturday to take on the Forest City Owls at McNair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
