Baseball standouts
Four baseball players who were not on the News & Record’s All-Area team deserve special recognition for their performance this season.
– Western Alamance’s Brock Deatherage, an N.C. State signee, was the Mid-State 3-A Conference’s player of the year. The senior center fielder batted .455 with 11 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 33 RBIs, 50 runs and 31 stolen bases.
– Blake Deatherage, Brock’s younger brother, batted .505 with 13 doubles, three homers, 43 RBIs and 32 runs. The junior third baseman also went 4-1 with two saves and a 1.96 ERA as a pitcher.
– Southern Guilford’s Ryan Hedrick was a two-time Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference player of the year and a three-time all-conference selection. The senior, who will play next season at Presbyterian, went 11-0 with a 1.18 ERA and 118 strikeouts as a pitcher for the Storm. He also played shortstop and batted .432.
– Taylor Sugg split time with Hedrick at shortstop and pitcher. The junior is a two-time all-conference selection who went 10-1 with a 0.79 ERA and 86 strikeouts on the mound.
Yep, we did not do a very good job of selecting an All-Regional team, but we hope you will forgive us. LOL.
