Five HPU baseball players named to 2014 NCCSIA All-State teams

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Five players on the High Point University baseball team were named to the 2014 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Baseball Team on Monday. Juniors Spencer Angelis and Conor Lourey were named to the first team while junior John McGillicuddy and freshmen Cas Silber and Josh Greene were named to the second team.

“We are extremely proud that five of our players were recognized as some of the top players within the state,” High Point head coach Craig Cozart said. “All five enjoyed outstanding seasons and helped us reach new heights this season. The recognition they have received is well deserved.”

Angelis is the first two-time first-team All-Big South selection in program history. He started every game for the Panthers in 2014 and led the team with a .390 batting average, 37 RBI and 37 runs scored. The junior led the Panthers in batting average, RBI, runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, extra-base hits and walks. Angelis led all Big South players in batting average and on-base percentage and was second in slugging percentage in conference games.

Lourey appeared in 27 games for the Panthers and finished with a 9-0 record, two saves and a 1.48 ERA. The junior struck out 70 batters in 54-2/3 innings pitched. The junior right-hander led the Panthers in wins, ERA, strikeouts and opponent batting average and tied for third in the Big South in wins.

McGillicuddy made 15 starts for the Panthers as HPU’s Friday night starter and finished with a 6-2 record and a 2.37 ERA. He led the Big South with three complete-game shutouts on the season. McGillicuddy finished among the conference leaders in wins, innings pitched, complete games and opponent batting average. He allowed two or fewer earned runs in 12 starts.

Silber was named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team in his first season with the Panthers. He appeared in 22 games with four starts and finished his first collegiate season with a 5-0 record and a 1.53 ERA. The right-hander struck out 61 batters in 59 innings pitched and held opposing hitters to a .189 batting average. He allowed just 38 hits and 10 earned runs in his 59 innings of work. Silber set a new HPU Div. I single-game record with 13 strikeouts in six-innings pitched at Longwood on May 10.

Greene was named honorable mention All-Big South for the Panthers in his first collegiate season. The outfielder finished with a .276 average, 30 RBI and 32 runs scored. He led the conference with four triples and was tops on HPU with nine steals. Greene finished second on the Panthers with a .350 batting average in conference games.

The five players selected the NCCSIA All-State teams is a new season high, besting the previous high of three which was set last season when Ryan Retz, Joe Goodman and Josh Spano were all named to the All-State teams.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
